OAKLAND, Calif. – On Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17, Clars Auction Gallery will conduct a Fine Interiors and Collections sale and an Asian Art & European Decor Auction, respectively. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
In the June 16 sale, Clars will present a monumental circa-1895-1906 painting by William Keith (American, 1838-1911) titled Into the Yosemite Valley. Estimated at $100,000-120,000, this 36 by 60in canvas has remained in the same family for more than 100 years since it was originally commissioned from the artist by Robert C. and Francesca Hall of Pittsburgh, Penn. Mr. Hall is referenced as its commissioner in the 1942 book Keith, Old Master of California, Volume I, by Brother Cornelius on page 451. This one of the most important works by Keith to come to auction in more than 10 years.

The June 16 auction lineup also contains a striking example of Albrecht Durer’s (German, 1471-1528) 1498 engraving titled Sea Monster. This work, estimated at $25,000-$30,000, depicts a nude female beside a scaled and bearded merman, thought by many to represent the abduction of Scylla by the sea demon Glaucus of Greek mythology.
Also featured on June 16 is a strong selection of jewelry, led by a 14K white gold, yellow diamond and diamond ring, estimated at $4,000-$6,000, and a pair of 18K white gold and diamond earrings, estimated at $3,500-$4,500. The colored gemstone pieces on offer include a 14K gold, emerald and diamond earrings and necklace suite, estimated at $5,000-$7,000; a Mozambique ruby, diamond and platinum ring, estimated at $3,500-$4,500; and a 14K gold, coral and seed pearl convertible necklace, estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Other standouts of note are an 18K gold pair of Tiffany & Co. earrings, estimated at $1,500-$2,500; and a stainless steel Breitling SuperOcean wristwatch, estimated at $1,200-$1,800. The furniture and decorative arts category will feature fine Native American baskets as well as a variety of European decor.

In the June 17 auction, Clars’ Asian Art department will offer an extensive collection of Japanese woodblock prints by the prominent artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), who is particularly known for his landscapes. He was a key figure in the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, which revived traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking techniques in the early 20th century. Highlighting the collection of more than 20 prints is Hasui’s Winter Moon Over Toyama Plain, estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Kawase Hasui’s works continue to be highly sought-after by collectors and art enthusiasts. His contributions to the shin-hanga movement and his skill in capturing the essence of his country’s natural beauty have made him one of the most celebrated Japanese printmakers of recent times.
