OAKLAND, Calif. – Redge Martin, president of Clars Auction Gallery, announced today that Mariam Whitten has joined the 46-year-old auction house as managing director.
Whitten, a San Francisco Bay Area native, comes to Clars from a 20-plus-year career at Bonhams San Francisco, formerly Butterfield & Butterfield. She began as their front desk manager before becoming director of Internet Services. Subsequently she rose to director of Business Administration, and lastly, VP Operations. With each position change, she was given greater responsibilities and larger staffs, eventually managing the company’s heads of operations in Los Angeles and New York, as well as San Francisco.
Many former colleagues and clients speak highly about Whitten’s collegial style and analytical abilities, and are enthusiastic about her move to Clars.
After 25 years at the gallery, during which time sales have increased ten fold, Redge Martin has decided to scale back his workload to pursue other interests. Many of his responsibilities will be taken over by Mariam Whitten.
Clars Auction Gallery appraises and auctions fine art, jewelry, antiques, Asian arts, vehicles and collectibles. The gallery sells more than 2,000 items in their two-day and timed sales, which are held monthly to live and online bidders. The property comes from estates, individuals, dealers, museums and other institutions. Fifty to 100,000 collectors and dealers worldwide view Clars’ online catalogs, with many of them bidding.
