CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Two highly significant Abraham Lincoln-related items dominated the field at RR Auction’s Remarkable Rarities event on September 23. Complete results can be viewed at LiveAuctioneers.

Topping the sale was a Lincoln pen-signed first edition of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, hammering at $475,000 and selling for $617,500 against an estimate of $100,000-$150,000. The sale began at $10,000 and registered dozens of bids before reaching the final price.

The 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas for a United States Senate seat from the state of Illinois are still considered a landmark series of events in American political history. Though Douglas would win the election, the visibility of the debates created national awareness for Lincoln, who would go on to win the GOP nomination in 1860 and eventually become president.

As expected, two front-row balcony tickets from Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC bearing the date of the night of the Lincoln assassination sold well above their estimate, hammering at $210,000 and ultimately selling for $273,000. The ticket holders watching the comedy play Our American Cousin could have witnessed John Wilkes Booth leaping from the private box occupied by the president and the First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln.

A personal check made out to “William Johnson (Colored),” signed by Abraham Lincoln as president, also overperformed, selling for $80,000 ($104,000 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $30,000-$40,000. Johnson was Lincoln’s White House valet, to whom Lincoln paid $5.00 with a check numbered only 12 in the account’s series.

Two Steve Jobs-related items also did well. First was an early Apple Computer Company check signed by Jobs in his famous lower-case style for payment to Graphics West, one of Apple’s early printing vendors. It sold for $45,000 ($58,500 with buyer’s premium) against a $25,000-$30,000 estimate.

Believed to be the only Steve Jobs-signed iPad every to come to auction (Jobs was notoriously averse to signing things, particularly this late in his career), it sold for $32,000 ($41,600 with buyer’s premium). It had been estimated at $10,000-$20,000. Jobs would pass away from cancer just 18 months after giving the first-generation iPad to a Hawaii doctor who had treated him.
