CRANSTON, R.I. — Interest in historic American military items continues to deliver eye-popping prices realized, as seen in Bruneau & Co.’s Historic Arms & Militaria sale held August 5. LiveAuctioneers presented the auction online.

The sale contained a wide variety of American and European arms dating to the Revolutionary War, portraits of historic figures, original correspondence from soldiers, and a small but impressive collection of original uniforms. While a strong portion of the sale was Revolutionary War-related, many lots hailed from the Civil War and even as late as World War II. In all, 349 lots crossed the block. All prices are exclusive of buyer’s premium.

The top lot of the sale was an engraved circa-1775 powder horn owned by Richard Andrus of Simsbury, Connecticut. Andrus served during and after the war in various elements of the American Continental (and later, United States) Army. Bearing the inscription “RICHARD ANDRUS his/horn Made at Roxbury October 5th: 1775,” the lot was expected to sell between $8,000 and $12,000, but hammered at an amazing $55,000 with dozens of bids.

Uniforms of the Confederate States of America continue to deliver powerful results, as seen in the remarkably preserved uniform tailored for Capt. Johnston De Lagnel of the CSA’s 20th Virginia Artillery Battalion. The uniform comes with the original 1864 purchase receipt from Charleston, South Carolina tailor Charles D. Carr. Estimated to sell between $10,000 and $15,000, spirited bidding finally stopped at $31,000.

Battle flags always command keen interest from collectors, and a Missouri First National Confederate Flag and Sash belonging to CSA Lt. Russell B. Caples (1841-1915) proved to be yet another example of this trend. Caples served from 1861 until his surrender in 1865 as part of Searcy’s Sharpshooters, a company in the 16th Missouri infantry. Estimated to sell between $5,000 and $7,000, bidders drove the original flag and sash to $24,000.
