Pie crimper and pocket knife collection carved out a respectable performance at Eldred’s

Scrimshaw marine ivory therianthropic pie crimper, which sold for $15,000 ($18,900 with buyer’s premium) at Eldred’s.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. – Peter Goldstein’s first collecting passion was scrimshaw and maritime artifacts. Buying since the late 1970s (he attended Sotheby’s sale of the famous Barbara Johnson collection in 1982) he held a particular weakness for the marine ivory pie crimpers or jagging wheels that in the hands of 19th-century American craftsmen evolved from the purely functional into folk art. He owned many examples, some of them considered the very best in class.

When 24 lots of marine ivory crimpers from the Goldstein estate were sold as part of the Marine Sale at Eldred’s on February 27 and February 28, it was a reminder that a truly great collection retains an allure regardless of when it is sold in the collecting cycle. The market is soft – relatively few achieved their presale estimates – but the merchandise still exceptional.

The most developed of the many forms for sale was a design that combines the other-worldly form of a serpent and a nude female torso and legs. Details, including the teeth and tongue of the snake, are picked out in red and black. This therianthropic model, dated to the mid-19th-century, is among the objects pictured in a well-known 1944 photograph of the pioneer scrimshaw collector Meylert Melville Armstrong (1905-1978) of New Hope, Pennsylvania. It was later owned by E. Norman Flayderman, author of the influential 1972 book Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen.

The auction house believed it could bring as much as $20,000-$30,000 (and 20 years ago, it would have made all of that and more), but it hammered at $15,000 ($18,900 with buyer’s premium).

Another crimper visible in the background of that black and white photo of the Armstrong collection is a remarkable six-wheeler that is inlaid with an abalone diamond and a circle of red sealing wax surrounding a five-pointed star. Measuring slightly more than nine inches, it is one of several known, all thought to be by the same late 19th-century hand. Estimated at $5,000-$10,000, the hammer price was $4,250 ($5,355 with buyer’s premium).

Among the most desirable and elegant crimper forms is the running unicorn, the mid-19th-century example here constructed from two sections of whale ivory with a baleen spacer, eyes, ears, and horn. Acquired from an auction at Richard A. Bourne Company in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1987, it was estimated at $6,000-$8,000 and hammered for $5,500 ($6,930 with buyer’s premium).

About 20 years ago, Peter Goldstein began studying Sheffield exhibition knives. His first purchases were the luxury late 19th- and early 20th-century multi-tool knives made for shop window display by makers such as the venerable Joseph Rodgers & Sons.

Typical was a gold and mother-of-pearl sports knife featuring 13 folding and three concealed pull-out elements. Stamped with marks for ‘Rodgers Cutlers to Her Majesty’ and ‘No. 6 Norfolk Street Sheffield’, identical copies of this knife are said to have been made for the Duke of Rutland and President Ulysses S. Grant. Another with silver rather than gold fittings is illustrated in the 1999 collecting bible Sheffield Exhibition Knives. Eldred’s matched its status with a $15,000-$20,000 estimate, but it fell a little short at $10,000 ($12,600 with buyer’s premium).

Goldstein’s interest in knife collecting branched out to include masterpieces by many of America’s finest post-war cutlers. A revelation were the prices for examples by the celebrated Oregon makers Ron Lake and H.H. Frank.

Newport, Oregon craftsman Heinrich ’Henry’ Frank sold his first knife in 1965, becoming a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild in 1971. As he made only six to eight knives per year until retirement, his works are uncommon at auction. His six-inch dagger folding knife with mother-of-pearl handle and finely engraved gold mounts, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, sold at $11,000 ($13,860 with buyer’s premium). As noted in an engraving to one side of the ricasso, the term for the unsharpened area of the blade, it was made for the 2001 Art Knife Invitational Show.

Cutlery Hall of Famer Ron Lake set up a workshop in Eugene, Oregon in the 1960s. Sportswriter B.R. Hughes called him the “father of the modern-day folding knife” and it has stuck. While Frank’s first pieces were simple fixed-blade hunting knives, his later models grew in sophistication. Estimated at $1,500-$2,500 and sold at Eldred’s for a remarkable $18,000 ($22,680 with buyer’s premium) was a small six-inch folding knife with an engraved aluminum grip inlaid with oblong shell panels that features a gold tab lock release that Lake believed was easier to use than the typical bar release.

Eldred’s Spring Sale brings Americana and vintage clocks to market April 4-5

Thomas Sully, portrait of West Point professor Jared Mansfield, estimated at $15,000-$25,000 at Eldred's.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — Eldred’s has announced a nearly 550-lot two-day Spring Sale for Thursday, April 4 and Friday, April 5. The sale includes a number of notable Americana lots, along with a 19th-century Thomas Sully portrait and desirable vintage clocks. The catalogs are now available for review and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The leading Day 1 lot is a 1967 Lotus Elan convertible with an odometer showing in excess of 64,000 miles. Eldred’s notes it is largely original, but has had a replacement frame installed. As a coveted British sports car, it is estimated at $20,000-$25,000.

Estimated at $12,000-$15,000 is an interesting Americana lot consisting of a Hassam Brothers (Boston) Bowie knife and sketch book thought to have been the property of Albert I. Sands of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sands served in the Union Army’s Massachusetts 38 Regiment, Company F during the Civil War, which saw action at the Battle of Point Hudson and other conflicts between 1862 and 1863. The sketch book contains numerous illustrations of battle scenes, one being described as ‘Charge of the Fire Zouaves at the Battle of Bull Run Sketched on the spot …’

In 1876, the United States celebrated its centennial. This flag from the period contains stars in the form of the numbers ‘1776 1876’ in the canton. With fading and some holes, the 28.25 by 45.25in fabric artifact carries a $4,000-$7,000 estimate.

Thomas Sully (1783-1872) was born in England but spent most of his life in Philadelphia, where he painted portraits of many early American subjects, including Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. At the request of West Point Military Academy cadets, he created this painting of Jared Mansfield, professor of mathematics at West Point. Apparently there are three versions of this work: one at West Point, one at Yale University, and this version, which Sully gave to Mansfield as a thank-you for introducing Sully to Thomas Jefferson, who became a close personal friend. The painting descended within the Mansfield family and is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Final highlights include a French Industry clock in the form of a windmill, estimated at $3,500-$5,000, and a Lemuel Curtis banjo clock with a door depicting Lake Erie, a War of 1812 naval battle, and a shield. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Paintings by women are the focus at Eldred’s March 13

Theresa Ferber Bernstein, 'Streetworkers,' estimated at $5,000-$10,000 at Eldred's.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — More than 150 paintings by women artists head to market as part of Eldred’s Women In The Arts sale scheduled for Wednesday, March 13. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Theresa Ferber Bernstein (1890-2002) lived a remarkable — and remarkably long — life, creating paintings alongside her husband William Meyerowitz in their Upper West Side artist loft in New York City. William passed in 1981, but Theresa would keep on painting, even having a public exhibition of 110 of her works on her 110th birthday. Streetworkers is an undated oil on canvas in her later expressionistic style. It is the sale’s top-estimated lot at $5,000-$10,000.

Alice Beach Winter (1877-1968) specialized in portraits of children, and her talent in this area brought her lucrative work illustrating books and magazine covers. Portrait of a Young Girl is undated and was likely a commission. It is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

A native Illinoisan, Pauline Palmer (1867-1938) became synonymous with the Chicago art world, where she would eventually become president of the Chicago Society of Artists in 1919. Village scene, Provincetown, Massachusetts is a signed but undated oil on canvas. The work is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Rosebee (born Cecelia Surdut, 1932-2016) began painting at age 57 and within three years won a jury award at an Illinois art show for her primitive works. Eldred’s sale includes Noah’s Ark, an 8 by 10in oil on board in her naive style. It is signed (07) ROSEBEE, so it’s likely a 2007 work. It carries an estimate of $700-$1,000.

Rich trove of naval historical artifacts charts course to Eldred’s Feb. 27-28

Ship’s wheel bracket helm in the form of a mermaid, estimated at $50,000-$70,000 at Eldred's.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — Nearly 400 lots of antique naval and maritime artifacts sail into Eldred’s as part of its two-day Winter Marine Sale, scheduled for Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28. The catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s top lot is a ship’s wheel bracket helm in the form of a mermaid. Made of cast iron and featuring exceptional detail, the helm dates either to the late 19th or early 20th century, and it was previously sold at Christie’s in 2006. It carries an estimate of $50,000-$70,000.

From an ‘important Connecticut collection’ comes a canine ship’s figurehead. Dated to the 19th century, the dog’s fur coat seemingly waves in the wind, and the piece has foliate and berry designs to the base. Measuring 78.5in in length, the figurehead is estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

The same collection has also contributed a lighthouse light with Fresnel lenses. The undated system has a contemporary metal frame and electrified rotation, and the lenses are bullseyes with refractive prisms inset. A large and impressive piece (overall height is 78in), it has been assigned an estimate of $15,000-$20,000.

Maritime art is always a bidder favorite at Eldred’s, which, in this sale, has a John Ward of Hull (1798-1849) oil on canvas titled A Frigate Offshore. Signed J. Ward 1831, the 19.5 by 28in painting reveals a wonderfully detailed seascape with several vessels, figures, a beach in the foreground, and the twin lighthouses at Spurn Head — the entrance to the River Humber that leads to the English city of Hull. The painting has a $30,000-$40,000 estimate.

The sale also includes whaling captain’s log books originally created by Captain John Bunker (1784-1854). He began the book series in 1815 with a year-long sail that yielded 1,400 barrels of whale oil. Eldred’s notes that “This is one of the earliest whaling logs to appear on the market in at least 40 years, and only about 115 manuscripts earlier than 1815 exist in public collections.” The five-book set is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — Eldred’s three-day Fall Sale, which took place on November 15, November 16 and November 17, was capped by the personal collection of Bob and Nancy Skinner, founders of Skinner auction house (now Bonhams Skinner), with numerous items soaring well above their presale estimates. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

A stoneware molasses double-handled jug proved to be the top item from the Skinner collection. Dated to the 1860s, the jug features wild illustrations of mythical creatures incised in cobalt blue. Dozens of bids drove the jug from an estimate of $3,000-$5,000 to hammer at $55,000, or $69,300 with buyer’s premium.

Today, Weston, Massachusetts is known for being a preferred home to American’s wealthiest individuals, but in 1852, it was the home to Mathias Collins. This fine American School painting is unsigned but includes an old handwritten note on the back that reads: The Estate of Mathias Collins [?] 1852 Weston [?] Mass. Mathias Collins is in his yard. His grandchildren are passing on their way to school. George, Fred & Ann Collins. Their own home adjoins to the grandfather’s estate to the right of the cows in the yard. Painted by an itinerant painter named Miss Polly. Bidders were taken by the simple yet highly realistic depiction, which hammered for $30,000 ($37,800 with buyer’s premium) against a presale estimate of just $1,000-$2,000.

Buyers pushed a $250 opening bid to a hammer of $18,000 ($22,680 with buyer’s premium) for an unsigned oil-on-board American School still life of autumnal fruit. With a pleasing, lifelike look and two horizontal cracks, the still life likely garnered the most bids in the sale.

A. J. King (1881-1963) was America’s premier carver of miniature wooden birds, making them so lifelike and perfectly decorated that they almost perfectly resembled the real thing. The Skinners were big fans of King’s work, amassing a small collection of the handmade displays. Another of the sale’s top lots was a small assembly of various geese varieties, which hammered for $21,000 ($26,460 with buyer’s premium) against a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.

HANOVER, Mass. — Collecting takes dedication, passion for the subject and a lifelong commitment. Nowhere is that more visible then when single-owner collections of any type come to market. Invariably, they reveal as much about the collectors as they do the subject matter. The truth of this fact was on display when the antique fire equipment and memorabilia collection of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Leslie hit the block at Eldred’s November 9. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The Leslie collection featured clear devotion to fire fighters and their historic legacy. There were not one but two antique fire trucks: a 1919 Ford Model T that passed, and a 1941 Seagrave-Ford that hammered for $7,000 ($8,960 with buyer’s premium).

Two 19th-century fire helmets fashioned from leather were also top sellers. One was for the Fall River, Massachusetts civic fire department, while the other featured a shield for “Whites One Fire Dept.,” from the era when fire fighting was conducted primarily by private firms. Estimated at $500-$1,000, the pair hammered at $3,250 ($4,160 with buyer’s premium).

Then, as it is today, fire departments formally acknowledge heroism and bravery in the line of duty. This lot of two presentation awards, a match safe and a memorial badge presented to Capt. W. O. Hunt of the Hingham Fire Department from 1889, were estimated at $300-$400, but fierce bidding drove the lot to $5,500 ($7,040 with buyer’s premium).

A five-piece lot of fire helmet shield holders of various designs — eagles, dragons and dogs — also burned through its $500-$1,000 estimate to hammer for $5,500 ($7,040 with buyer’s premium). A leather water bucket in remarkable original condition featured a gold-framed cartouche of a classical-looking female rushing to carry water to a fire. Estimated at $1,000-$1,500, it sold for $2,400 ($3,072 with buyer’s premium).

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — Eldred’s traditional fall sales are always important events packed with quality merchandise, but this year’s has even more appeal: the addition of the Bob and Nancy Skinner collection. Founders of the legendary Skinner auction house of Boston — now known as Bonhams Skinner — their Americana collection appears at auction for the first time. Catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3).

The reasoning behind the Skinner family’s selection of Eldred’s is simply personal: the families, part of the group dubbed the “Big Four” of New England postwar auction houses, have been friends for generations. As noted by CEO Joshua Eldred, himself a third-generation owner, “We are incredibly proud to be handling this collection on behalf of the Skinner family. Because of our personal and professional relationship, selling these items is such an honor, but beyond that, it’s a truly fantastic group of Americana, as you would expect Bob and Nancy to have.”

A classic example of the New England seascapes favored by artist Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) tops the first session. Scituate Beach, Moonlight is from the 1870-1875 period and is signed by the artist, who was not well known in his time but has since become highly regarded by art historians. The 10 by 12in oil on artist board depicting a Massachusetts coastal town carries an estimate of $100,000-$150,000, reflecting strong market interest in Heade’s works.

Also dominating the first sale is a child’s wardrobe built to resemble Kew Palace in west London. Signed Edmund Joy 1709, it is the only other known example from this otherwise obscure builder and artist, the second being a very similar wardrobe in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London that is signed and dated Edmund Joy 1712. The wardrobe is estimated at $70,000-$100,000.

The Day Two session is strong with 19th- and early 20th-century art, lead by Three Partridges on a Pitch Pine. Created by outdoorsman, conservationist and painter Aiden Lassell Ripley (1896-1969), the work reflects the artist’s focus on realism and his technique of painting and drawing en plein-air to capture the authenticity of his subjects in their natural environments. Three Partridges is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Known for excellent sales often sourced from prominent New England collections, Bob and Nancy Skinner collected what they loved. The 154 lots presented on the third day by Eldred’s reflect their passion for early American miniatures, created by forgotten craftsmen to capture the American experience on a small scale, often for children. The sale includes 34 lots of miniatures, led by a miniature firkin attributed to prominent toymaker and cooper Cotton Hersey (1792-1891). The firkin, or fluid receptacle, is described as a Hingham, owing to the Massachusetts town’s reputation as “Bucket Town,” with more than 400 coopers residing there.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. — As the oldest continuously operating New England auction house, Eldred’s has presented fine art and Americana auctions for generations. Its upcoming Americana + Marine two-day sale, scheduled for Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15 (Day 1, Day 2), showcases fine art, sporting items and maritime art and collectibles.

Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919) was a self-taught romanticist painter whose struggles with mental illness plagued his later years. He continued to create while institutionalized, and in 1916, one of Blakelock’s paintings sold for $20,000 at auction, then the highest price ever paid for a work by a living American artist.

Two lots in Eldred’s sale are attributed to Blakelock. Indian Encampment at Sundown is somber landscape that is estimated at $5,000-$8,000, while Evening Silhouettes is a twilight image of a natural setting. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Nineteenth-century politician and statesman Daniel Webster is captured in a classic but unsigned American School portrait. Measuring 27 by 22in, the unframed work has an estimate of $500-$1,000.

Famed Dutch-American artist Antonio Jacobsen has been called the “Audubon” of maritime art. Eldred’s has a stunning example of his work, The screw-steamer Pieter de Conick, with an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.
