AMESBURY, Mass. — In a two-lot auction, two prime period works by the great New Hope School landscape painter Daniel Garber (1880-1957) come for sale at John McInnis on Friday, November 3. Signed and dated 1927, Ferry Road is estimated at $300,000-$500,000, while the earlier work The Mary Maxwell House has an estimate of $150,000-$250,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Ferry Road, a view along the Delaware River, was exhibited and sold at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the year it was painted. It comes by descent to the present owner from Mrs. J. F. Tatem, who bought the painting for $1,500 on March 16, 1927. It is also accompanied by its original bill of sale and receipt from the Pennsylvania Academy, together with a letter discussing the purchase of paintings by Morris Hall Pancoast ($500) and Jean Lawson Peacey ($600).

Adding significantly to the picture’s appeal is a carved and gilded frame made by Frederick Harer (1879-1949). An artist himself, he produced frames for many of the Pennsylvania Impressionists, including Edward Redfield and Daniel Garber.

The Mary Maxwell House, a 2ft 6in by 2ft 1in oil dated to circa 1910-20, depicts the view from the painter’s house in Bucks County, populated only by a milk wagon on a rustic lane. Also presented in a period carved and gilded Frederick Harer frame, it has a provenance to the late Vance Jordan (1943-2003), the New York dealer who pioneered the market for American Impressionism.
