OTTAWA, Ohio — A keen-eyed bidder spotted the hidden gem at Vintage Auction on December 20. Wedged in between hundreds of lots of baseball cards and sports memorabilia was a single-owner collection of NASA-related items, unremarkable at first, but highly desirable on further inspection.

The multi-item lot had newspaper clippings and other memorabilia related to various NASA historic events, but the gem was a space-flown miniature American flag from the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission that launched April 11, 1970 and made an emergency return to Earth on April 17.

NASA routinely sent non-essential items into space to serve as collectors’ items for VIPs after the mission had returned. For Apollo 13, it was miniature American flags. The plaque featured this flag affixed to it, along with the caption THIS FLAG WAS ON BOARD APOLLO XIII DURING ITS FLIGHT AND EMERGENCY RETURN TO EARTH and facsimile signatures of crew members Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise.

The lot also included two space shuttle-flown flags (one on STS-65 from July 8-23, 1994 aboard Columbia, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11; the other from STS-2, the second-ever shuttle mission, November 12-14, 1981, also aboard Columbia), as well as a signed but undated period photograph of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin reading To Ann / Thanks and Best Wishes / Buzz Aldrin.

This lot had been estimated by Vintage Auctions at a modest but respectable $700-$900. The keen-eyed bidder felt otherwise and lodged a single bid of $5,100 via LiveAuctioneers, which went unchallenged, and the lot sold with buyer’s premium for $5,992.

These unique and historic items will either be a cherished cornerstone of a private space-related collection, or will return to market with much higher valuations in the near future.
