MT. CRAWFORD, Va. – Concept drawings by John Orfe, an American automotive and airline designer, will be presented at Jeffrey S. Evans on Friday, August 25.

The mid-century depictions of streamlined vehicles years ahead of their time are expected to bring between $100-$500 each. Bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

John Orfe (1922-2011) was born in Philadelphia and began a lifelong love affair with motor racing after seeing his first auto race at the Langhorne Speedway in 1932.

A combat artist in the Pacific during the Second World War, he became an influential automotive and airline designer from the middle of the 20th century.

His clients included some of the top automotive publications of the period plus Chrysler, Volkswagen and Boeing. At Ford he worked with the team charged with the task of redesigning the Lincoln Continental, which was on the brink of being discontinued. Ultimately, Orfe and the team were able to convince management of the need for a radical revision of the old model, which resulted in the now-iconic 1961 car. An exhibition of auto racing art by Orfe was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 2016.

The 11 pencil drawings and watercolor sketches in the sale date from the Second World War period until circa 1950, when the artist and his clients had returned to civilian life. They range from a watercolor depiction of a racer on a time trial at the Bonneville Salt Flats circa 1939, estimated at $300-$500, to a concept drawing for a two-wheeled vehicle with retractable stabilizers circa 1944, estimated at $100-$200. Judging by his designs, Orfe’s aesthetic was years ahead of its time.
