City of Deadwood acquires 4 historic artifacts

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) – The city of Deadwood has added four historic artifacts to its collection.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that city commissioners recently approved the $8,500 in purchases. They include a McDonald Deadwood saddle bag for $3,100, a Henry Frawley office docket from 1894 to 1898 for $450, an original 1898 Northern Ore District map for $550 and a rare 1877 Dakota Territory reward poster for $3,500.

They’re being paid for out of the historic preservation budget.

Deadwood Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says the items interpret and provide insight into early Deadwood, including two profiles of former early mayors.

Kuchenbecker says the territorial-era wanted poster for the person who murdered Deadwood stagecoach driver Johnny Slaughter is “real west” memorabilia, not a replica or something found in a gift shop.
