Indiana University. students unearth South Bend history in dig

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A group of college students is discovering bits of the city’s history in a summer archaeology dig on the grounds of a vacant synagogue.

A team of Indiana University South Bend students has been digging on land surrounding the vacant former Sons of Israel synagogue. They’ve collected more than 100 bags containing small pieces of glass and pottery, brick, animal bones, a horseshoe and other artifacts.

IUSB professor Jay VanderVeen says this is the first dig he and his students have undertaken, but he hopes to do more.

The artifacts are catalogued at a campus laboratory and cleaned with water the toothbrushes.

The students plan to move their dig to a vacant lot near the Center for History next.
