NEW ORLEANS – A 2007 factory-sealed first-edition iPhone sold for a record price of $39,340 on Sunday, October 16 in the LCG Auctions Fall ’22 Premier Auction. The final price surpassed the previous record by nearly $5,000.

Originally released at retail on June 29, 2007, for $599, the original iPhone included eight GB of storage, a touchscreen, a two-magapixel camera and a web browser. The iconic box features a life-size image of the iPhone with 12 icons on the screen. It quickly became Apple’s most successful product, forever changed the smartphone industry, and was named the Time Magazine Invention of the Year in 2007.

“We expected the bidding for this item to be fervent and it did not disappoint as a handful of avid and sophisticated collectors drove the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to this record-setting amount by Sunday night,” said Founder of LCG Auctions Mark Montero. “We congratulate the winners, our consignors and all of the bidders for making this one of the most active auctions in our history.”

In all, the October 16 sale’s 225 lots of collectibles, including a wide selection of pop-culture memorabilia from the 1970s and 80s, established 18 record sale prices. The most notable were in two of the fastest-growing collectible categories – G.I. Joe and Masters of the Universe (MOTU). A 1987 G.I. Joe Defiant playset, graded 80 by CAS, sold for $32,513; a 1982 G.I. Joe Destro action figure, AFA 85, sold for $15,168; a 1982 MOTU He-man 8-Back action figure, AFA 80, sold for $32,513; and a 1982 MOTU Skeletor 8-Back action figure, AFA 80+, sold for $17,288.
