Description
A Songye Power Figure, Nkisi Democratic Republic of Congo, c. 19th to early 20th century Wood with a reddish-brown patina from age and use, possibly cleaned at one time. The figure mostly covered with hide and braided vegetal twine, a metal bell attached to one braid, choker and other necklaces around neck, cowrie shells at eyes, brass tacks at ears and at top of forehead with a copper strip down forehead, a strip of raffia cloth securing a small bundle on crown. Two sticks attached to arms for carrying (nkisi figures were not to be touched). In very good condition, appropriate for its age, origin, materials, and use. Custom wood base. Note: With "bikumba," the carrying poles of a community magical figure.
