Description
A c.1960 Silvertone 1446 hollow body electric guitar, no serial number, in black finish. Owned and played by Randy Bachman, who has sold 40 million records worldwide as a member of The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and as a solo artist.
The Silvertone 1446 is widely known as “The Chris Isaak model” thanks to his use of and association with the guitar early on in his career, holding it in advertisements and even going so far as to name his debut album “Silvertone.”
What makes this example even more special is its symmetrical double-cutaway body shape, one of only a scant handful produced. Normally, the 1446 shares the single cutaway body shape of the Harmony H-71 Meteor, among other details like the sound holes.
However, this double cutaway 1446 has more in common with the H-75, but with the 1446 appointments including the sleek black finish, Seth Lover designed mini-humbucker pickups (some of Randy’s favorites), Bigsby B-3 vibrato, and white plastics including the art deco pickup surrounds, pickguard, and cupcake knobs. Currently less than five, likely only three, are believed to exist.
Only available on the Silvertone 1446, the Seth Lover designed Gibson mini-humbuckers use a distinctive 3x3 screw pole piece pattern which pokes out from beneath the chrome covers.
Lover, famous for designing Gibson’s PAF humbucking pickup in 1955, would go on to use the same pole piece styling on Fender’s Wide Range humbucker found on 1970s Telecasters and Starcasters. The 3x3 mini-humbuckers are raw, clear, and formidable.
The guitar itself is in very good condition for its age. Clean, gently-aged black finish, original white plastic pickguard, cupcake knobs, pickup surrounds, and switch plate. 20 frets on a bound rosewood fingerboard with small celluloid block inlays, 3x3 headstock design with Silvertone logo. Bigsby B3 vibrato with replaced bridge.
