Description
Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), probably Jiaqing Period (1796-1825)
Decorated with fruiting vines.
L. 13 1/4 in.
Note: It is thought that the shape of the ruyi may come from the lingzhi fungus. From the earliest period in the history of China a hand held scepter was used and developed into the Ruyi. An iron scepter may have been used to point the way and for self defense. Over the years, the ruyi became associated with the longevity symbolism and carried around as an elegant and auspicious plaything giving authority to its owner.
