Description
**First Time At Auction**
Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A lovely bronze hanging censer of conical form displaying an annular platform under its circular base and thin walls that taper to a narrow, slightly flared rim. The ancient vessel is flanked by two elongated diamond-shaped pieces of bronze that project and curl at their top to form lugs. Each lug holds a sizable ring attached to a chain for suspension. The flared rim once had a lid with petite perforations to allow the incense's aroma to escape, and the chain, comprised of several links that stretch between the lugs, would allow the thurible to be swung during sacred ceremonies, filling the air with ethereal aromas and creating a multisensory religious experience for early Christians. Size without chain: 2.875" W x 3.875" H (7.3 cm x 9.8 cm); Size with chain: 17.25" H (43.8 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Condition
Two barely distinguishable perforations to sides of vessel. Slight indentations to base, commensurate with age, but form is still very clear. Speck of modern peach paint on rim. Otherwise, excellent and still functional with lovely patina.
