Description
**First Time At Auction**
Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A fine bronze reliquary cross with a long body and projecting arms flare at the ends. The beautiful piece is incised with the image of St. Stephen topped with a halo and wearing an orarion over a dalmatic, as he holds a censer - a traditional attribute of his iconography - in each hand. His name - Saint Stefanos - is inscribed in Greek above him. Each end of the body displays a pair of loops that allowed the piece to be previously hinged to another side and possibly hold a relic within it. Size: 3.125" L x 1.875" W (7.9 cm x 4.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York

Condition
Missing other half. Some abrasions and softening of detail, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina.
