Fine 18th C. British Engraving of Christopher Columbus Meeting Native Americans
A plate from Charles Theodore Middleton's "A New and Complete System of Geography," ca. 1777-1780, entitled "The first Interview of Christopher Columbus with the Natives of America." The engraving is bordered by a trompe-l'oeil window decorated with vegetal garlands and urns. The printed inset at top reads "Engraved for Middleton's Complete System of Geography - " while the printed inset below shows the title. Well-defined plate marks. Minor edge darkening. Trimmed at right, and with a small oblong area of light foxing located in the upper right corner. Else near fine. 9.125" x 14.5."
The engraving depicts the imagined first meeting between Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) and the indigenous peoples of the New World. In the foreground, European sailors demonstrate the concept of ringing bells to the delight of marveling natives. This depiction of exploration--and the underpinning justification of colonization--relies on Eurocentric tropes widely circulated in art and literature of the time. The natives, whose simplicity is symbolized by complete nudity, are awed by the superior civilization offered by the Western World (great ships, navigation, clothing, science, technology, etc.)
