Robert Clarke and Co, 1870. PIONEER LIFE IN KENTUCKY. A Series of Reminiscential Letters from Daniel Drake, M.D. Of Cincinnati to His Children. Edited with Notes by his son, Charles Drake. The book includes a laid Signed and Inscribed page by Daniel Drake "To Mrs. Pounsford - / From her affectionate brother / Dan Drake / Cincinnati / June 30th 1827". Original green cloth, extensively worn, frayed and rubbed with the spine torn at the top. Cracked and loose binding. Original brown coated end papers and tissue guard. Internally clean with outer edge nicks to some page in the back of the book. "Much has been said and written of the warlike and adventurous aspects of Pioneer Life in the West; but these letters are believed to be the only attempt at a detailed description of its more peaceful phases."
The American physician Daniel Drake (1785-1852) was one of the founders of the medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also participated in social, political, and economic movements in the Ohio Valley and wrote extensively on medical subjects, his most important work being Principal Diseases of the Interior Valley of North America. Drake was cofounder in 1826 of the Ohio Medical Repository, a medical journal designed to improve medical standards in the West.
