Description
LIBERTY WYBURD ATHELSTAN TYPE ARMOIRE (NEEDS RESTORATION)w stained fruit wood marquetry panel 78 1/2”h, 42 1/2”w, 19 3/4”d Features & Markings: This specimen features an overhanging ogee-molded top, and a stained fruit-wood marquetry panel. It is unmarked. This wardrobe bears a strong family resemblance to the Athelstan wardrobe shown in Liberty Design, p112, in that it features an identical hand colored fruit wood marquetry panel. The Athelstan line of bedroom furniture first appears in the 1902 Liberty Furniture Catalog, and is identifiable as Wyburd by such characteristics as inverse tapered legs. Condition: The wood and finish are in good condition, although some shrinking has occurred (typical of furniture exported from England to the USA). The finish is a medium/light oak on the interior, and a dark “mission” golden oak on the exterior. It is missing hardware, and the marquetry panel while complete and intact has delaminated in places and needs re-gluing.
