VITTORIO SELLA. Kangchenjunga, Telephotograph from Jongri, 1899, Sella number HS 148. 6.6x9" collodion print, printed 1901, mounted on 10x12" heavy brown board. Embossed with Vittorio Sella stamp in lower right of print. Inscribed in black ink mount recto: Kangchinjinga (telephoto) from near Jongri. Inscribed in pencil mount recto: 148 / HS 148.
Here the view is toward the north east as the expedition was nearing the end of its circumnavigation of Kangchenjunga.
Kangchenjunga 8,586 m 28,169 ft. lies in the Kangchenjunga Himal straddling Nepal and Sikkim, India with 3 of the 5 peaks on the border. Contains 16 peaks over 7,000 m (23,000 ft.). It is 78 miles 125 km east-southeast of Mt. Everest. It is 45 miles north of Darjiling. The western side is from Johnsong La down the Gingsang and Kangchenjunga glaciers and the rivers of Ghunsa and Tamur. South of the southern face of Kangchenjunga the Singalila Ridge separating Sikkim from Nepal.
It has five major peaks, Kangchenjunga Main 8,586 m 28,169 ft., Kangchenjunga West/Yalung Kang 8,505 m 27,904 ft, Kangchenjunga Central 8,482 m 27, 828 ft., Kangchenjunga South 8,494 m, 27,867 ft and Kangbachen 7,903 m 25,928 ft.
Kangchenjunga is roughly bound on the west side is the Tamur River, the north the Lhonak Chu (River) and Jonsong La (Peak), the is the Teesta River.
