Description
Black StoneIndia , 12th century or laterDimensions: Height 10 cm by 7,5 cmWeight: 661,5 gramsThis black stone head represents a Jain, here depicted with a broad face, small lips, long nose and downcast eyes with thin eyebrows. The ears are elongated and the neck shows several necklines. Tiny curls cover the head. The cranial protuberance or ushnisha is missing just like the dot between the eyes or urna, making it clear that this is a depiction of a Jain. Jain comes from the word "jina" meaning "liberator" or "victor". The historical founder of Jainism is not Buddha Gautama but Mahavira.
