Description
After John Blake White (American/South Carolina, 1781-1859). "General Marion in His Encampment Inviting a British Office to Dinner" -1840, mezzotint. Engraved by William Sartain (American/New York, 1843-1924). Note: The Apollo Association was the first form of the American Art Union, both of which promoted American art by commissioning paintings and distributing prints of those paintings through a subscription service from 1839-1851. "The Sweet Potato Dinner" as this print is colloquially known, was the first in the series produced by the Apollo Association. It depicts Revolutionary War General Francis Marion (1732-1795) or the "Swamp Fox" who used guerrilla tactics in the swamps of the South Carolina Pee Dee and Lowcountry to confuse the British army, in a meeting with his British counterpart. Provenance: From the Lifetime Collection of Billy S. Arant, Jr., Chattanooga, TN. Approx. 19.5" x 24" (sheet), 16.5" x 20.25" (image)
