Ancient Near East, Southwestern Iran, Elamite culture, ca. 1900 to 1300 BCE. A gorgeous bronze axe head, made to imitate a fierce weapon but with ornate flourishes on its blade and haft-hole. The blade flares outward in a spectacular curve, its edge delineated as a thinner border, with the cross-section of the axe's center quite thick. The haft-hole is cylindrical, with an abstract, avian-like crest or beak emerging from its back. Thick ridges horizontally around the hole give it a nice texture. A heavy patina of russet, green, and blue covers the surface of this ancient weapon. Size: 4" L x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
