Evangeline was a character from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie", which was published in 1847. The popularity of Evangeline continued to grow thanks to the many engravings produced in the second half of the 19th century. These pictures began appearing shortly after the publication of the first illustrated version of the poem in 1850. Some artists or engravers copied and reproduced images created by their contemporaries. Others created original works, incorporating elements or details of already published pictures. These affordable engravings were framed and put up on walls in many homes. They provided a window onto the outside world as well as to the imaginary world. Vast numbers of people thus had an opportunity to contemplate the image of Evangeline as they talked about the tragedy of the exile of the Acadians in 1755.
