Description
VIVIEN LEIGH.Three photographs from Vivien Leigh's family album. United States, 1940.Provenance: gift from Domitila, Vivien Leigh's last maid, to Mrs. Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet. Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet private collection.Measurements: 8 x 10.5 cm.These three photographs immortalize the Olivier couple at their friend Mr. Hamilton's house during their honeymoon. Captured in 1940, all the snapshots show the protagonists in casual attitudes and poses, enjoying Mr. Hamilton's pet and the surroundings of the villa. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier met during the filming of the movie "Fire over England" in 1936. At that time, the English actor was still married to his wife, Jill Esmund, which is why he had to keep his relationship with Leigh a secret until 1940, when they were finally able to marry. Many anecdotes are told about this marriage. On the one hand, it is said that the ceremony lasted only three minutes and only had four guests. It is also said that Olivier asked for the wedding to take place on a terrace overlooking the Santa Barbara Mountains, so that he could imagine that he was in his native England. In any case, the wedding marked a before and after in the relationship of the couple who, after years of clandestine courtship, were able to proclaim their love to the four winds. After a turbulent relationship of almost fifteen years, their romance began to crumble in the late 50s. Leigh's bipolar crises, among other aspects, led the Oliviers to separate, putting an end to one of the most stormy relationships in Hollywood history.
