Description
VIVIEN LEIGH.Two photographs from Vivien Leigh's family album. Kathmandu, India, 1964.Provenance: gift from Domitila, Vivien Leigh's last maid, to Mrs. Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet. Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet private collection.Measurements: 9 x 14 cm. each. The pair of photographs presented here were taken during Vivien Leigh's 1964 trip to India with her friend Mr. Hamilton. In one of the snapshots the couple appears at the airport in Kathmandu, while in the other the friends have a drink at the hotel where they are staying. At the age of six, Vivien Leigh left her native Darjeeling to move to London with her parents. 51 years later, in the autumn of 1964, Leigh returned to the East attracted by the beauty of its people, the exoticism of its streets and the nature of its landscapes. Her correspondence by letter with Jack Merivale, a British actor who accompanied her from 1958 until her death in 1967, reveals Leigh's interest in cities such as Kathmandu, Delhi, Madras and Karanjia, whose temples, funeral pyres and experiences (such as elephant rides) brought her closer to her earliest roots.
