Description

Moe Berg Signed Notes from a Telephone Conversation with Herbert Hutner

3pp, measuring 8.5" x 7", no place, undated. Handwritten notes by Moe Berg, signed "MB", addressed to a recipient only identified as "DDM." Notes on memo paper, from a telephone conversation with businessman Herbert L. Hutner, regarding P.R.M. Inc, formerly Pressed Metals. Portions of the conversation are numbered, and read in part:

"The cash offer for P.R.M., Inc. is still in the hands of their attorneys and looks as though it will go through…I told him, that we might be able to meet or better any proposal, including the cash offer they was now considering. He said it wouldn't be [illegible] to reveal the offer at this time. He will get in touch with us if this deal does not go through…He asked me to have lunch with him next week." The pages have a flattened horizontal fold at the center. Light soiling. Pencil smudging to the first page. The document comes with a copy of a JSA Auction Letter of Authenticity, authenticated February 12, 2016.

Herbert Loeb Hutner (1908-2008) was an investment banker, attorney, and philanthropist. He started his career on Wall Street and later served as the Chairman of Pressed Metals of America, along with other metal and mining companies. From 1982-1990, Hutner served under Ronald Regan and George H. W. Bush as the chairman of the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. He famously married actress and socialite Zsa Zsa Gabor in 1962, but the marriage only lasted four years. It is unknown what deal Berg was attempting to finalize, and with whom he was communicating, but given his clandestine history, it is possible that he was working with the government in some capacity.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
