Future British Hero and Governor of New York Robert Monckton 1749 Requests Gunpowder and Ammunition for a British Regiment

ROBERT MONCKTON, Manuscript Document Signed, Requisition, March 25, 1749. 1 p., 8.75ʺ x 7.25ʺ. Tears on one fold with some paper loss, slightly affecting one word; very good. Ex Christie's, Sigety.

Then Major Robert Monckton requests additional gunpowder and ammunition for the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot, which had been raised in 1702 and saw action in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-1720), the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), and the Jacobite Rebellion (1745-1746). Later, it participated in the Seven Years’ War, the American Revolutionary War, and the Napoleonic Wars. James Cholmondeley (1708-1775) served as the regiment’s colonel from 1742 to 1749.

Complete Transcript:

"These are to Certify that the Ammunition issued for the use of the Honble Major General Cholmondeley’s Regiment of Foot, is all expended in Exercise and Discipline of the said Regiment, and therefore I pray an order may be issued for the delivery to the said Regiment of Six Barrels and a half of powder, one Barrel of Flints, and one hundredweight of Musquett Shot.

Robert Monckton (1726-1782) was born in England and enlisted in the British Army in 1741. He rose through the ranks, becoming major in the 34th Regiment of Foot in 1748. In 1752, he was placed in command of a fort in Nova Scotia. He served as a British commander in the French and Indian War, in which he led forces that captured a French fort in Acadia and the island of Martinique in the West Indies. He was second in command to General James Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec in 1759, and he served as Governor of the Province of New York from 1762 to 1765, though he returned to England in 1763. He sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1782.
