Liquor License, March 24, 1778
"These are therefore to certify and declare that the said John Barrett is herby admitted allowed and Licensed to sell by Retail all and every kind of Spirituous Liquors to be drank in his now Dwelling house for the Year Ensuing unless otherwise ordered by the General Assembly of this State
"Provided allways he doth not suffer any unlawful Gaiming Drunkeness or any other Disorders to be Commed in his said house but that Good Order and Rules are maintained and kept in his house."

Deed for Property in Dunstable, Massachusetts, to Lewis R. Morris (1760-1825) of New York, signed by John Barrett, December 10, 1784. Morris moved to Springfield, Vermont, in 1786 and served as federal marshal for Vermont from 1791 to 1794.

Survey of "Black River Meadows" in Springfield, Vermont, on both sides of the Black River, at its mouth on the Connecticut River, where John Barrett owned a great deal of land; notarized on the verso by Notary Public Joseph C. Boyd, July 5, 1813. The property now includes both the Springfield Town Forest and the Southern State Correctional Facility.

John Barrett (1731-1806) was born in Boston and married Elizabeth Edwards in 1755. Around the same time, he moved to Middletown, Connecticut, where all four of their children were born, and engaged in trade. Around 1771, Barrett moved with his family to the future site Springfield, Vermont, where he had purchased a large amount of land along the Black River. He and others received a charter for the town from the Province of New York in 1772. During the Revolutionary War, he was a captain in Colonel Seth Warner's regiment. He was at Ticonderoga and participated in the Quebec expedition of 1776. He represented Springfield in the convention that framed the Vermont Constitution in 1777 and in the General Assembly in 1778, 1781, and 1782. At his death, his real estate was appraised at $22,500.
