This archive of letters shares a variety of family news within the family of Judge John Fitch of Mansfield, Connecticut. Several were written to Harriet E. Viall Fitch (1792-1884) from her niece and her sister, and she wrote one. Others were written by or to Mary B. Abbe or John Fitch Jr.
[CORRESPONDENCE.] Archive of 16 letters, sent among the family of John Fitch of Mansfield, Connecticut, 1834-1851. 29 pp., various sizes. Expected folds; some edge tears or tears on opening; some loss at edges and folds; very legible.
John Fitch (1783-1845) was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale College in 1803. He read law with a judge and at the Litchfield Law School and was admitted to the bar in Windham County, Connecticut, in 1805. He was married three times, first in 1806 to Sarah Cleft (1784-1807), second in 1811 to Huldah Dyer (1783-1812), and third in 1814 to Harriet E. Viall (1792-1884). In 1821, he moved to Mansfield in Tolland County, Connecticut. He was twice elected to the state senate and served as chief judge of the Tolland County Court for three years and judge of the Probate Court for Mansfield for four years, as well as serving as state's attorney for Tolland County for several years.
