Item Details
Description
Davids notes: A startling and beautiful painting of a woman, probably Isenburgers fiance, walking down a street in Augustow,Poland. This painting would have been important personally for the artist, and a significant example of his early work. While we don't know for sure, it is more than likely that this is a portrait of Anna Jula Elenbogen, since the woman appears to be walking down the street wearing a Slavic bridal crown on her head and Isenburger traveled to the area in 1927 to marry Anna, his Polish girlfriend, who lived in Augustow.

This painting measures 30 inches by 27 inches in a frame 35 inches by 32 inches.

Eric Isenburger
Isenburger was born in Berlin in 1902, and in 1927 goes to Warsaw to marry his Polish girlfriend, the dancer Anna Jula Elenbogen, who had lived in Augustow. At this time in his life, Isenburger was already a great artist. His training at the Frankfurt Art School and Frankfurt School of Applied Arts had matured his skills as European Modernist, his sense of color and stark shaping of landscape forms were already stunning. In 1931 Isenburger and Anna return to Berlin, where the National Socialist Party is in control. In 1933 Isenburger has his first solo exhibition at the Wolfgang Gurlitt Gallery, and a National Socialist Magazine declares that Isenburgers show is 'degenerate Jewish art'.This is the same time the Reichstag fire occurs, which helped solidify the power of the Nazi party, forcing the Isenburgers to flee to Paris on the advice of Wolfgang Gurlitt. After being briefly jailed in France, the Isenburgers emigrate to the United States and he has the first of eight shows at the Knoedler Gallery in NYC, to critical acclaim

The Eric and Jula Isenburger Society was founded in 2008 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation with the goals of making Isenburger's works accessible to scholars and to the public, sponsoring research on the artist and his life, and organizing exhibits and conferences.

This painting was discovered in a NY area storage unit, probably originally brought to the United States by Isenburger, since it had such a personal connection to his marriage.
