Description
John F. Kennedy: Personally Owned PT-109 Model. JFK's war-time experiences aboard PT-109 were an important political asset during his quest for the Presidency. He was also no doubt proud of his service in the Navy. So much so, that he kept this model of PT-109 on display in his Congressional and Senate office (Room 1702 of the old Federal Office Building). It was a gift from members of the "Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. VFW Post". In 1958, he gave it as a gift to his Uncle George Connelly while on a trip to Palm Beach. It appears to be a commercially produced model made of plastic, thread and paper, and may have required some assembly of the component parts. It is 30" long, 8.5" across, and rests on a plastic stand. There are five decals identifying the boat as either 109 or PT-109. There are seven crew members at their battle stations. It appears complete. The only defect we note is the "metal" shield for the rear machine gun is loose and needs to be reglued. It also could use a careful dusting. A letter of provenance from the family accompanies the lot.
