Lewis Carleton Ryan spent later part of his life in Escondido, California, where he was a noted illustrator, block printer, writer, and public benefactor. Born in Austin, Texas he moved to California in 1919. Prior to moving to California he attended schools in Washington and Montana, before eventually attending the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles where he also had a studio. He moved to Escondido in 1951. Many of his wood-block illustrations were published in the 1920s and 1930s in the Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Westways, and the Los Angeles Times.
