Description
Group of various items related to Charles C. Paige, 11th New Hampshire Infantry. Includes an intact and excellent condition volume of Ms. Felicia Heman's “Poetical Works” with a letter written by Paige to his wife Mille. The letter describes the book's capture from a deserted home that was ransacked by both Federal and Confederate soldiers. Also included in the group is an annotated paper envelope of “glass thread” also taken from a Jackson, MS home during the war; an unmounted wartime CDV of an unidentified woman; a souvenir leaf; circa-1877 NH Veteran ribbon commemorating the Army & Navy Monument in Boston, MA; a colorful print of a magnolia, Mississippi's state flower; and a Berlin-work embroidered ribbon reading “To My Dear Papa.” An interesting and well-documented souvenir group.
Paige was a 24-year old from Candia, NH when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company I, 11th NH Infantry on 8/11/1862. He mustered in on 9/2/1862. Paige escaped fighting in the west unscathed but was subsequently wounded at Bethesda Church, VA on 6/3/1864, following the Ninth Corp's return to the eastern theater. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 12/5/1864 but was unable to be mustered as such due to the severity of his wound. Paige was discharged on 8/23/1865.
