Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 1350 to 1521 CE. A charming hand-built and highly-burnished pottery jar with a round but stable base, a circular body with a protruding midsection, a rounded shoulder, and a squat rim that perhaps at one time held a lid. The greyware vessel exhibits red-orange decorations across all surfaces, with panels of stippled, floral, and zigzagging motifs enclosed with additional linear zigzags, and the base is densely adorned with concentric square and rectangular details. Size: 6.4" W x 4.125" H (16.3 cm x 10.5 cm).
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition
Original lid missing. Small chips to rim, light abrasions to exterior surfaces, with small area of fire-darkening, and fading to original pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within interior.
