Description
Pair of early American dessert or coffee spoons, decorated with busts of Washington, Thomas Harland, Norwich, CT, circa 1800, or Henry Harland, Norwich, CT & New Orleans, LA, circa 1832, the bowls are upturned with shell decorated backs, the handles decorated with wreaths surrounding a bust of Washington, his name above. Marked ''HARLAND'' on the back of each. 7''l. Total approximate weight 2.5 troy oz. Provenance: Imperial Half Bushel, Baltimore, MD, 1988. Note: We are guided by the entry for the matching set of Harland forks in ''American Silver at Winterthur,'' by Ian Quimby, 1995, Winterthur: Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, pages 112-114. There, the forks are ascribed to either the father, Thomas Harland, or his son, Henry Harland. The entry admitting that a case can be made for either, with neither being able to be firmly proven.
