Description
Pair of Arab jamugas from the end of the 19th century.Wood carved with mother of pearl.Measurements: 104 x 46 x 34.5 cm.Pair of chairs inspired by the old jamugas, but with rigid seat instead of leather. Made of wood, they are decorated with relief carvings, including vegetal motifs and mother-of-pearl inlays. Both have a legend in Arabic, where we can read: "He who has patience wins" and "science is useful".Historically, the jamuga has its origin in the Nasrid world of the Kingdom of Granada. In the Hispano-Muslim tradition it was common to sit on the floor, on large cushions and carpets. However, some elements of the palace furniture were also available for this purpose. The Royal Spanish Academy defines jamuga as a saddle that is placed on the rigging of horses to transport distinguished women. In the Castilian inventories of the 15th century it also appears under the name of saddle of hips. The current name of jamuga could be a dialectal perduration. It also has a very specific structure. It is a double scissor saddle that can be folded to adapt to the shape of the horse.
