3 Antique 18th c. French Chinoiserie Wall Paper Plaques

Item Details

Description

Group of three plaques (France, ca. mid-18th century) depict Westernized Chinese social scenes, accented by motifs of fancy foliage, birds and architectural imagery. Formally fashioned in the early wallpapering method, facing side of each plaque is comprised of three large separate copper-plate engraved paper sheets (also w/ hand colored accents) which have been layered together and mounted over wood board to create one final image. Edges finished with strips of gilt ribbon. The original boards have been backed with sheets of modern plywood and newer hanging implements for optimal preservation and display. Plywood backing to one plaque has started to separate from the original board, which is noticeable near top edge and upper sides, and may be repaired. Even toning to paper of each plaque, with some areas of foxing and other general light wear showing age (small tears, holes, scratches, etc). Overall in good condition considering age. Each panel measures approximately 58.75" x 22" inches.
