Description
Fine large-format Aubusson tapestry with classic verdure scene, France, circa 1780. Detailed courtyard setting features elements of robust foliage, a trickling fountain, Arabian figures (including warrior on horseback), and elaborate scrolled and floral borders. Central medallion to top center reads "Le Travers à la Gauche", or "Across to the Left" (as translated to English). Tapestry is lined on reverse with cotton backing, and has original metal hanging suspension loops sewn in along top ridge. Overall, tapestry shows even toning to fabric from age. Has some holes / fragmentation to bottom right hand corner, also to localized section near top right corner. Several minor holes to backing fabric in one small area to left side. Separation to backing fabric in a few areas at finished edges, although not significant. Some creasing from folding. Mostly in good standing otherwise, may be professionally repaired. Measures approximately 12.5 x 10.5 feet.
