Description
Featured in this lot is this Oscar Crockett silver mounted low port curb bit. The bit is constructed from stainless steel with a slight shank; the outside of the shanks is decorated with silver mounted plates in the shape of the shanks and tooling to the silver mounted plates. Oscar Crockett was born in Pecos City, Texas and learned to make bits and spurs by watching his older brother. Oscar worked in blacksmith shops and would partner up with George Gliem for a year or two before starting his own shop in Oklahoma. He eventually worked for C.P. Shipley. In 1920, Crockett bought Shipley’s bit and spur making department and started the Crockett Bit and Spur Company. The condition of this bridle bit is good, with no obvious signs of damage and slight oxidation and patina due to exposure and use. The measurements of this bit are 7" x 5 3/4" x 2".
