[1], 297, [4]pp. Lacks pages 13-16. Quarter calf with marbled boards. Top cover detached and first endpaper detached. First American edition. Alexander Gerard was a Scottish minister, philosophical writer, and academic. In 1752, he became Professor at his alma mater, the University of Aberdeen, first of Natural Philosophy, and afterwards of Divinity. During this time, he was also one of the ministers of the city, serving at Greyfriars Church. He was a member of the Aberdeen Philosophical Society and in 1783, he co-founded the Royal Society of Edinburgh with a number of other prominent professors.In 1756, for An Essay on Taste, Gerard received a prize from the Edinburgh Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Sciences, Manufacture, and Agriculture. Along with An Essay on Genius, these treatises gained considerable reputation for him.
