John White Allen Scott (American, 1815-1907), Sunset, Schoharie Creek, Catskill Mountains, NY
oil on canvas (lined), signed at lower right, retains artist's studio label to the verso, presented in a period gilt frame
Stretcher size 16 x 26 in.; Frame dimensions 21 1/2 x 31 1/2 in.
John White Allen Scott apprenticed with Pendleton's Lithography in Boston, Massachusetts. Between 1844 and 1847, Scott partnered with Fitz Henry Lane to produce lithographs specializing in ships, landscapes and architectural scenes. Scott was a talented painter in his own right and associated with the Hudson River School and White Mountain art. He was member of the New England Art Union and the Boston Art Club. His paintings are in numerous prominent public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts - Boston and the Farnsworth Art Museum.

Obscuring varnish; no evidence of retouch visible under UV light; stable craquelure; light surface grime; later gold paint to frame.
