Description
A Carved ooden helmet mask with traces of mineral pigments. Kom (also Bamileke / Bamumkom) peoples, Tikar group, ca. 1920s. Cameroon, West Africa. The mask features arched brows, large and wide-open almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose with curved nostrils, cup-shaped ears protruding from the sides, a large open mouth revealing upper and lower teeth, and a cap-like coiffure or headdress incised with decorative striations/lobes. The wood also presents with nice traces of red and white pigments. The mask measures 13 inches tall x 9.25 inches wide.Provenance: ex-private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, collected in the 1960s.
