Description
A Kom (Bekom) "Kam" mask, Cameroon, Africa. This type of mask was carved from a dense heavy wood and was worn atop the head, similar to a cap , and then the dancer would wear a costume covering the face and rest of the body. In the Grasslands of northwestern Cameroon, every village and every town has its own group of so-called "Juju dancers" who perform during funeral rituals and feasts in honor of the ancestors. The Mask has a well handled surface patina suggesting years of ceremonial use. The mask measures 13 x 9 inches and has an old label from the Ben Pickard Gallery, Oklahoma City.Provenance: Ben Pickard , Ok, USA, The Dr Brian Healy estate, New York, USA.CONDITIONfair, well handled
