Description
VERY RARE RUSSIAN ICON SHOWING ST. GEORGE AND ST. DIMITRIOS
Early 18th c., verso with inscription and date 1726/36(?): 'Jakov.... restoring'.
31,7 x 28 cm
The two independent motifs of St. George and St. Dimitrios are put together here to form a composition. In the foreground St. Demitrios is depicted.. He stabs the pagan Bulgarian king with a lance. This scene is a symbol of the salvation of the city of Thessaloniki from the Bulgarians in 617, which was attributed to the assistance of the saint. Behind him rides St. George on a white horse and stabs the kite with a lance. The princess rescued in this way stands in front of the city gate. Both equestrian saints receive the martyr's crown from an angel.
