Grigory Bureev (or Bureyev) was born on January 16, 1900, in the Svergino Village in the Vladimir Province, and where he also passed away on September 8, 1972.
Bureev had studied at the studios of the Committee of Trusteeship of Russian Icon Painting (1912); his teacher was I.M. Bakanov.
He was a member of the Artel of Ancient Painting since 1930. His subsequent teacher was Ivan Golikov, whose works he frequently copied. Bureev was also posthumously awarded the title of Merited Artist of the RSFSR in 1974.
Themes of his work included folklore, literature, history, revolutionary subjects, genre scenes, troikas, and hunting scenes ("A Bogatyr's Wife", "Dyuk Stepanovich", "Schrovetide", "A Meeting", "Beyond the Outskirts of the Village", "Defending the Russian Land", "The Inspection of a Horse", "A Stroll", "The Tale of Tsar Berendei", and "Gypsies").
Bureev exhibited since 1932, and his works are now held in the State Museum of Palekh Art, the State Russian Museum, the Zagorsk State Historico-Art Museum-Preserve, the Museum of Folk Art, and the All-Russia Museum of Decorative and Applied Art.
