Description
USS Hartford, Commanded by David G. Farragut, Flag Piece from 1861
USS HARTFORD. A delicate piece of red, white, and blue silk and linen flag, measuring 0.75” in diameter (sight), framed to 1.375" in diameter, Philadelphia, ca. December 1861. The USS Hartford was anchored at Philadelphia, having new guns installed, when it presented its flag to the city before hoisting a new flag. The piece on display here is from that flag.
The USS Hartford was built and launched at the Boston Navy Yard in late 1858 and commissioned on May 27, 1859. She served in several prominent Civil War campaigns as the flagship of Union Rear Admiral David G. Farragut, most notably the Battle of Mobile Bay. She was decommissioned on August 20, 1926, and sank at her berth on November 20, 1956, while awaiting restoration.
