A beautiful and sizeable wooden chest of rectangular form flanked by twin metal handles with a tiered base and hinged lid. Painted in brilliant hues of cobalt, powder blue, coral pink, lemon yellow, burnt orange, mint and fern green, and white, the exterior of the chest displays several decorative rectangles of abstract vegetal and cloud-like motifs, all surrounded by a floral border. A lovely phytomorphic decoration painted in shades of caramel and chocolate brown additionally embellishes the interior of the lid. The verso exhibits 2 slender metal strips running from top to bottom to secure the hinges. Used to store linens, chests like this example would have been highly valued by their owners and passed down through generations. Size: 40.375" L x 19.625" W x 15.5" H (102.6 cm x 49.8 cm x 39.4 cm)

Missing lock, but still opens and closes. Repair to upper left corner, re-enforces with nail and glue. Expected surface wear, especially to top, with nicks or chips, abrasions, and splintering of wood throughout. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining pigments.
