Francis de Erdely (1904-1959) was a Hungarian-American artist renowned in the U.S. and Europe for his powerful figure paintings and drawings. He is best known for images of immigrants, laborerers, dancers and social outsiders that he made in Los Angeles in the post war period, which relate directly to his experience as an immigrant.
De Erdely developed his technical prowess through a classical art education in Europe. He studied at the Royal Academi of Arts, Budapest, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Frenando, Madrid, and the Sorbonne and Ecole de Louvre in Paris.
His work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco among many other institutions.
