Description
RUSS P. BURR (MASSACHUSETTS, 1887-1955) FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED MINIATURE OWL FIGURE, depicting an owl with painted features of brown and white feathers, yellow eyes, and black accents, perched at an angel on a natural piece of wood, signed in pencil "RUSS BURR / SO. HINGHAM / MASS / 1935" to base. Together with a carved and painted folk art figure featuring an owl and a pheasant-type bird, mounted in a wedge-shaped wooden base. Two pieces total. First half 20th century. Burr example 3 7/8" HOA.
Burr example in good to very good overall condition with a few spots of paint flaking including to ears, glue repair to one leg and the other leg with loss, figure sits slightly loose on legs; other figure in very good overall condition with a few minor flakes to paint, owl figure with glue reinforcement to legs and tail, possibly lacking a component behind other bird.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.
